People love a pretty smile. The whiter and straighter a person’s teeth, the prettier the smile appears to other people. However, the cost of dental care often deters people from receiving the necessary dental care to keep their teeth healthy and white. Paying somewhere around $300 a year for basic dental hygiene visits is daunting to many people who already struggle to make ends meet. Dental insurance may aid in a person being able to afford these worthwhile dental visits. Dental insurance plans, though, do not tend to offer the same value of dental benefits a similar medical insurance policy can offer for regular medical care

Definition of dental insurance

Basic dental insurance can be purchases in individual or group plans. These plans can help with the costs of dental care for an individual or a family. Regular dental hygiene check-ups and accidental damage to teeth can be covered by a dental insurance plan. A dental insurance plan may also help offset the cost of special hygiene procedures. However, orthodontia may not be covered in a dental insurance plan. If orthodontia costs are the main reason for purchasing dental insurance, the buyer should make sure the policy covers it.

What are the options?

There are options for an individual seeking to purchase dental insurance. One type of dental plan available is the closed panel plan which limits a person to the use of only a certain group of facilities. This also limits the number of dentists available to a policyholder. Another type of plan is the indemnity plan. This is basically a fee-for-service plan so it comes with limitations and co-payment options. The policyholder is free to select his or her dentist of choice which may be important to the individual. Other plans include, but are not limited to, capitation plans, preferred provider organizations (PPO), and dental care service plans.

Exactly what is covered?

The best way to know what is covered by a dental insurance plan is for the individual to read the policy. Because there is a variety to plans and coverage, the only way for a person to know what is covered and how it is covered is to study the individual policy. A plan can have limits on the number of X-rays, dental visits, and treatments covered. A plan can even only reimburse a patient for the cheaper treatment. Some plans, though, may allow a patient to select the more expensive treatment but only reimburse for the amount of the cheaper treatment. This leaves the patient to cover any price difference out of pocket. Also, some plans may not cover pre-existing conditions or purely cosmetic procedures.

When purchasing dental insurance, an individual needs to know exactly what is covered under a plan. The best way to know coverage is to speak with an insurance agent for the plan’s company and also read the policy. After a person has a dental plan, he or she should make sure to discuss dental treatment costs with the finance manager for the dentist. The manager can explain the treatments and costs and also contact the insurance provider to learn what part of a patient’s planned procedures will be out-of-pocket. Knowing one’s dental plan and discussing it with an agent and the dentist’s finance manager can help a patient prepare for the costs of dental procedures.
